The Meat and Potatoes

On the page entitled, "Our Two Cents," you were able to read what each team member had to say. Well, here is a "meat and potatoes" overview of we collectively thought were the most important pieces to answer our module questions.



Although this book was written from the standpoint of teaching ESL in Chinatown, the approaches, strategies, and techniques used are excellent for teaching any struggling reader. Being patient and understanding the primary culture of the students should occur before teaching and learning can even begin. It was also agreed upon that students should immerse themselves in the American culture as much as possible to assist in becoming fluent in the language.

Creativity must be present--instruction may need to be presented in a variety of ways in order for students to comprehend.

Simply smile!! It can transcend any language barrier.

We need to go slow with the students and give the chunks at a time, in order to digest what is being taught to them to get the big idea. ESL students need to feel that they and their culture is important in order to feel self worth. Having students share their beliefs and their way of life brings knowledge to others and for students to realize their part of a bigger world.

Teachers can help their diverse students to comprehend by going in depth about the concept and using graphic organizers, study maps, and paraphrasing. As a teacher working with diverse students, we should welcome their differences, culture, and beliefs. Teachers should allow students to share and discuss their differences and culture.
