About Us

"Teaching a lesson to a classroom full of students who speak fluent English at times has it's obstacles.  Imagine teaching a classroom with students who barely understand the language!"

Greetings visitor! We are a cooperative learning team studying together in an online course, EDT 459 through The University of Dayton. In this course, middle childhood and intervention specialist candidates examine the strategies and techniques in the development of prior knowledge skills, study skills, vocabulary, technology, and assessment as they relate to critical reading abilities in a variety of curriculum areas. This course is part of Ohio's 12 Hour State Mandated Reading Core. Early childhood, middle childhood, intervention specialist, and multi-age licensure student must meet this requirement.

For this particular module we are using the book "An Island of English: Teaching ESL in Chinatown," to guide our discussions and further understand strategies and techniques used to facilitate the learning of reading in an ESL classroom.

The task for this module is as follows:

"Discuss with your team your thoughts, feelings and reactions to the "Island of English" text thus far.  What are you thinking and what are you finding as important take-aways for you?  Summarize what your team feels are the most important elements of the text thus far.  What do you think are the critical points for other teachers to know?"

We hope that you find our information as useful to you as it was to us! Please bear in mind that these are only are take-aways and findings for the first few chapters. At the time of the publication of this blog, we are only in the beginning of the course. Let us know what YOU think!
